What is your library story?
This week we celebrate National Library Week with the theme “Create your own story @ your library.” My library story began over 20 years ago in my hometown. I don’t remember my first trip to the library, but I remember visiting it often. I enjoyed the Summer Reading Club, where free passes to the swimming pool could be earned, and wandering up and down the rows of books. This is how I discovered old classics and new favorites. As a six-year-old, I would tell anyone who asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, that I would be a librarian and play the flute in an orchestra. Well, half right is pretty good.
The Buda Public Library’s story was shaped greatly by former librarian Marjorie Martinez. She came to the library in the summer of 1989 and stayed for over 20 years. In 1989, the city of Buda had fewer than 1,800 residents and the World Wide Web had just been invented. Under Marjorie’s direction, the Buda Public Library welcomed thousands of new residents and embraced new technology. She was the director of the library when the library moved from the original metal building into its current location and planned for the next location. She led this library to what it is today. On September 21, 2010, the Buda City Council approved a resolution to rename the library’s reading room as the Marjorie E. Martinez Room in her honor.
Join the Friends of the Buda Library and library staff on Saturday, April 16 from 2-4 p.m. for a National Library Week reception, including the dedication of the Marjorie E. Martinez Room at 2:30 p.m. at the Buda Library.
