On Center

Okay, I think we’re about to hit summer’s halfway mark and for me, it can’t come soon enough. The rivers are dry, the grass is crunchy and I can’t seem to quit yawning. Everybody looks a bit dazed and weary, running from their air conditioned cars to their air conditioned offices and back. Only 40 more days until Hays CISD kicks back into full swing so play with those kiddos while you have the chance.
Actually, this Friday is a great opportunity to have loads of fun with the family and not spend loads of money. After all those pesky morning chores are done, head on down to the Kyle Pool at noon and lower your core temperature for a couple of hours. Then head on over to Gregg- Clarke Park and have a picnic dinner or throw some meat on the barbi and spread out your blanket and stake out your spot for some big green ogre watching. The free movie in the park this month is “Shrek Forever After”, the final chapter in this popular series, and it rolls at sunset.
On the other end of Center Street, just across the highway, PAWS, the no-kill animal shelter is celebrating its 25th anniversary on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. and then hosting an adopt-a-thon on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Free collars and leashes, pet photos and commemorative t-shirts for everyone who opens their homes to a shelter animal.
And finally, for all the kiddos who joined the Kyle Public Library Summer Reading Club, the Wrap-Up Party is Thursday, the 14th at 10:30 a.m. There will be face painting, a moonwalk, train rides, snow cones and prizes so head to the library and join in the fun.
And then, at the north end of the county, our sister library is throwing out a challenge for kids from 9-18 years old to hone and showcase their writing skills. The Friends of the Buda Library is partnering with the Hays Free Press to sponsor the Summer Essay Contest for Young Writers. First place prizes (in each division) are $100 and essay publication in the August 10 edition of the Hays Free Press. Call the library 295-5899 or visit friendsofthebudalibrary.org for information. But hurry. The deadline is August 1, 2011.
