Science Hall Blood Drive coming

Science Hall Elementary School is sponsoring a blood drive, set for Saturday, March 26, 9 a.m-noon, in the school parking lot. School nurse Maria Mendoza-Rodriguez, R.N., can be contacted at 268-8502 for more local information, but early registration is recommended at www.inyourhands.org, where the sponsor code of “sciencehall” will be required. Additional information, such as who is eligible to give blood, can also be found at the site.


Chapa 5K approaching

The Fifth Annual Chapa 5K Challenge is set for Saturday, April 9, and this year’s big news is the $500 (conditional) prize to the organization with the most entries. An unconditional $250 prize is also offered. Fees are $5 for elementary students, $10 for middle and high school students, and $15 for 18 and over. Three school levels and ten age levels are offered and 1-2-3 awards will be given in each. An alternate offering, Zumba, is offered for $5. Register online at http://hayscisd.revtrak.net/. Hawks reading for pleasure

Reinforcing the 40 Assets goal of “Reading for Pleasure,” Hemphill Elementary librarian Lourdes Cervantes reports “Camp Read Around” was held recently, with over 100 students staying after school and reading for four hours. Campers enjoyed pizza, s’mores, and five different reading rotations, with free books for all who participated.


Tobias Dad’s Zone rolls

Word from Tobias Elementary is that over 300 dads, grandpas, uncles, and other male role models participated with students in the Tobias Dad’s Zone recently. Kicked off by the music of the William Tell Overture, adult buddies paired with younger partners “turning pieces of paper into hats, surfboards, and other wild and crazy things while dancing, then dispersed to stations that promoted family relationships, learning and fun.” Librarian Karen Kessel reports the Tobias PTA underwrote the event, which was directed by Rob Rodriguez, founder/director of Family for Life.


Live Oak Academy hosts garage sale

Live Oak Academy hosts its first-ever Community Garage Sale Saturday, April 2, from 8 a.m-1 p.m. Support is welcomed in the form of donated items for sale, purchase of a booth from which to sell ($10 fee), or by shopping the day of the sale. Donations may be dropped by the Academy at 4820 Jack Hays Trail starting Monday, March 21. Soccer/drama camps at Negley

It’s that time of year when first word’s out about upcoming summer camps and two new offerings are soccer and drama camps at Negley Elementary School June 6-10. Notes on the soccer camp include mention of “games, drills, skills, scrimmages, and fun!” The drama camp highlights “improvisation, skits, reader’s theatre, prop games, and monologues.” Price for either camp is $150.
