After suffering its first loss of the 7-on-7 season against Dripping Springs, Hays had only 10 minutes to regroup to play Lehman.
It turned out that was more than enough as the Rebels jetted out to a 27-0 halftime lead en route to a 41-25 victory over the Lobos Tuesday night at Shelton Stadium.
“We never like losing,” said Hays quarterback Caleb Kimbro. “We played a bad game against Dripping Springs. We wanted to come out strong against Lehman.”
Kimbro started the game’s first scoring drive with a 30-yard pass in the seam to Michael Romero that led to a touchdown pass to Mason Cervenka.
Romero made a diving catch at the 9-yard line to set up Hays’ next touchdown, a pass from Kimbro to Romero on third down.
After Hays’ third defensive stop of the game kept Lehman off the scoreboard, Kimbro threw a 25-yard fade to the left corner of the end zone that Granger Studdard hauled in for a score.
The Rebels’ final touchdown of the half came on another fade to the left side of the end zone, this time from 20-yards out to Trevor Ragsdale.
“We always seem to play better against our cross-town rival,” Romero said.
Lehman played like a new team in the second half, as Matt Anguiano started things off by throwing a touchdown pass to Julio Besa.
Jaylon Hardaway broke away from the Hays defense next to haul in a 30-yard Anguiano touchdown pass.
Matt Riojas and Levi Medley would add touchdown receptions for the Lobos after halftime, as would Hays’ Jaxson Schaubhut and Studdard.
“I thought we played a lot better after halftime,” Lehman coach Lee Perry said. “We’re not going to get down on ourselves. The key is to get better week to week and take things one step at a time.”
Hays will play in the Lake Travis state-qualifying tournament on Saturday. The top two teams in the tournament will automatically qualify for the State 7-on-7 Tournament to be played in mid-July in College Station.
Next Tuesday Hays plays Wimberley and Akins at Shelton Stadium. Lehman plays Bowie and Wimberley.
