Sporting a brand new slide, the Kyle Pool is gearing up for its 2011 season. The pool is open every day but Monday through Labor Day and swimmers can purchase a season pass or pay on a daily basis. Check the Parks and Rec website for all kinds of summer activities happening at the pool including swim lessons, fitness classes, family and teen nights, movies and Red Cross training certification. Mercifully, finals, senioritis and all the end-of-year parties and band and choir concerts are finally over (although Cavendish outdid herself with her swan song last week, replete with a surprise a cappella send-off performed by returning Cavendish alumni that brought the crowd to their feet). It must be summer.

The pool finally opened up on Saturday (with a new slide, no less) and the library is getting ready for the grand kick-off celebration of their annual summer reading program. Not only will there be treats and drinks and a pinata to bang around at the Kyle Library next Wednesday, but our very own mayor, Lucy Johnson, will be the featured storyteller.

The library has also carved out an additional “game time” on Friday afternoons to accommodate the older crowd that may want to cool off in the library and play wii and other board and computer games. The fun begins each week at 1 p.m. for the 7-12 year old crowd and then amps up at 3 p.m. to bring in the 13 to 17-year-olds.
Between the three Hays County libraries, their summer reading programs and activities, and their additional focus on the wee ones with new puppet shows and craft days, it seems like there is something for the kiddos to do most every day in June. Add the movies and music in the city parks and they’ve got you covered from daylight to dark. (Check out the current All Around Hays for an overview of June activities.)
