STAFF REPORTS

About 100 people turned out on Monday to celebrate Martin Luther King Day at the Hays County Courthouse with rousing speeches followed by a march that streamed down LBJ Drive and then turned onto MLK Drive.

Hays County has dedicated a plot of land at the intersection of the two streets for a monument honoring both the civil rights activist and the U.S. president who did more than any other toward ending discriminatory Jim Crow laws.

Supporters of the LBJ/MLK Crossroads Project have raised enough funds and commitments to pay for the monument, Pct. 1 Commissioner Debbie Gonzales Ingalsbe announced, and will soon begin seeking design proposals from artists.

“Today, we celebrate the dream of this memorial becoming a reality,” Ingalsbe said.

The event is sponsored by the Dunbar Heritage Association.
