Ruth R. Crumley, 96, of San Marcos died Saturday, January 29, 2011, at St. David’s Hospital in Austin. She was born October 26, 1914 to Taylor and Bessie (Gibson) Ramage in Scurry County, Texas, the oldest of nine children. She was currently a resident at Emeritus of San Marcos, and prior to moving there, she resided in her home on Franklin Drive in San Marcos.
She married Horace Crumley on May 14, 1932 and lived in West Texas until March 1941 when they moved with their three children, Gene, Alton and Clyde to San Marcos. In August of that same year the forth child, Hilda, arrived to join the clan.
Horace began working at Camp Gary when construction was begun on that facility and continued to work in the fire dept. and later as Fire Chief until he retired from civil service. Ruth worked as a doctor’s assistant to Dr. R. F. Sowell, Sr. for 19 years.
She was active in the VFW, Eastern Star and she and Horace were founding members of the Holland Street Church of Christ.
Her parents, her husband, five siblings, one son, Alton, two grandchildren and one great-great grandchild preceded her in death. Survivors include Gene and Moe Johnson of Kyle; Grace Allen Crumley of Odessa; Clyde and Linda Lewie Crumley of Corpus Christi and Hilda and Bill Potsavich of Austin; two sisters; one brother, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Her greatest pleasures were her 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and six little ones – great-great grandchildren. Nothing pleased her more than to have one of them on her lap. “Mamaw and Granddaddy” were like “best friends” to all the grandchildren. And what memories the “great-grands” were when it came to dying Easter Eggs. She thoroughly enjoyed her family and the neighborhood little ones as well, they all called her “Mamaw.”
Graveside service was held at Memory Lawn Memorial Park on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 with Pastor Lin Pineland of the Holland Street Church of Christ officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to her favorite charities: Holland Street Church of Christ, Medina or Cherokee children’s homes or the American Cancer Society.
