Both the Hays High boys and girls soccer teams kept rolling along in district play after weather forced both of their games to be rescheduled last week.

The Hays boys destroyed LaGrange and Smithville by a combined score of 20-0 to improve to 12-0-1 overall and 3-0 in District 49-4A.

The Rebels played LaGrange on Saturday in a game originally scheduled for Tuesday, but Hays was still as sharp as ever.

Parker Thornton scored a ha trick of three goals in the first six minutes of the game and the outcome was never in doubt. Omar Rangel added three goals of his own, and Jared Herselman, Uriel Hernandez, Billy Bolton, Mauricio Reyes and Julian Salas Porras all added a goal each in the win.

The Rebs then went on to dominate Smithville 9-0 Monday night in a game originally scheduled for Friday.

“The guys handled the weather situation well,” said Hays head coach Jason Burnett. “It wasn’t anything anyone could control, and when it was finally time to play they took care of business.”

Against Smithville, Herselman had a three-goal hat trick, and the Rebels got a goal each from Thornton, Talon Homesly, Jared Rodriguez, Rangel and Reyes.

Things will get tougher quickly for the Rebels, as they were scheduled to play Bastrop before playing at Lockhart Friday night. Hays then plays host to rival Lehman at Lobo Field on Tuesday.

“We’ve done what we needed to do so far,” Burnett said. “To say things are about to get tougher is an understatement.”

The Hays High girls also had impressive wins over LaGrange and Smithville, as the Lady Rebs allowed only one goal and scored 16 of their own.

Saturday against LaGrange, Kelly Uriesti had two goals, while the Lady Rebels got one goal apiece from Savannah Derrick, Lena New, Lindy Mendoza and Bracie Harris, who also added two assists, in a 6-0 win.

In a 10-1 drubbing of Smithvile Monday night at Shelton Stadium, Lena New already had a hat trick when she slammed home her fourth goal of the game into the back of the net with 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Uriesti had three goals against Smithville, while Caragh Givens, Tina Acuna and Derrick also had a goal apiece to help Hays improve to 3-0 in District 49-4A.

“I’m really pleased with the way we’re spreading the ball around right now,” said Lady Rebel head coach Cole Reynolds. “A lot of different players are finding the net, and that’s going to be important when we get into some of the more challenging games.”

Hays was scheduled to play Bastrop this week and will host Lockhart Friday night before traveling to Lehman next Tuesday.

All of the upcoming boys and girls varsity games are scheduled to begin at 7:45 p.m.
