David Lynn Akard finally won his ten-year battle with cancer at his home in Buda, on February 12, 2011. He was surrounded by his sisters, Lugene Herrin and Jodee Stocki, and their honorary sister, Kathryn Metzler.
A memorial service will be held on an early spring date in order to celebrate Dave’s love of the outdoors and God’s creations and to honor his courageous life. David was born on September 17, 1954, in Greenville, MS, the fourth child of six. In addition to his sisters, he is survived by his brothers Perry, Jack and Randy Akard. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Genevieve Akard, and his wife, Lois Myers, who was the love and greatest joy of his life. In the early ‘80s, David owned a small natural foods restaurant called the Good Earth Café in Sherman, TX. In 1988, David graduated from the University of Texas with a masters degree in social work. During his career in education, he worked as a special education counselor serving students with exceptional needs and was most recently employed with Hays CISD for 15 years prior to his retirement last year. David also did volunteer work at a local prison further exhibiting his selfless, loving nature and he was very active in the SYDA Foundation of Austin. Most notable was David’s love of and involvement in the lives of his nieces and nephews. Their Uncle Dave contributed generously to their personal growth and their educations and Chris, Shelley and Cain Williams, Krista, Kelly, Casey, Andrew and Van Akard, Vanessa and James Akard, Travis Hood, Elliott and Rachel Stocki, Russell Akard, Hank and Jack Ahtone, Nicholas Baxley, and Randi Marie and Jackson Akard are truly Dave’s greatest legacy. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all of David and Lois’s dear friends and families who supported them throughout their illnesses in ways too numerous to mention. Donations to Hospice Austin are encouraged in memory of David and Lois for all their incredible care, as well as the compassion shown to their families.
