Two Kyle men threaten girlfriends with knives
Two Kyle men were arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon last week in separate incidents involving knives, police say.
In the first incident, Joe Edward Perez, 19, allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a knife during an argument that began inside the Target store in Kyle on Jan. 11, a Kyle Police Department spokesperson said.
Perez began to pinch his girlfriend and at one point tried to choke her inside the store. Once outside the store in a vehicle, Perez grabbed her by the hair and displayed a knife and said that he would stab her in the leg, police say.
The woman, who sustained minor injuries to her arm and leg, reported the assault to police on Jan. 17. Perez was arrested and charged Jan. 20 with a second-degree felony assault and released from the Hays County Jail the same day on a $10,000 bond, the spokesperson said.
David Wayne Renfro, 38, was arrested Jan. 18 and charged with a first-degree felony assault that happened at the Plum Creek RV Resort in Kyle, police say.
While inside an RV, Renfro allegedly threw his girlfriend down to the ground and dragged her across the floor. He then displayed a knife to her in a threatening manner. The woman had injuries to her knees and foot, the spokesperson said.
As of Tuesday, Renfro is still in jail on a $50,000 bond, court records show.
Property taxes due
Put the check in the mail. Property taxes are due no later than Jan. 31 if taxpayers want to avoid costly late payment penalties, Hays County Tax Assessor-Collector Luanne Caraway said this week.
Payments can be mailed on Jan. 31 but must bear a Jan. 31 postmark. Starting Feb. 1, a seven percent penalty is added to unpaid tax bills and an additional two percent is added each month through June when it reaches 15 percent. Starting July 1, an additional 15 percent is added and continues to increase by one percent each month.
Taxpayers with both a homestead exemption and a senior citizen or disabled exemption can enroll in a quarterly payment plan. Qualifying taxpayers can pay one-fourth of their total bill by Jan. 31 followed by payments every two months through July 31.
For information, visit www.hayscountytax.com where payments can be made by credit, debit or e-check. Payments can also be made at any of the tax assessor-collector’s four offices in San Marcos, Buda, Dripping Springs or Kyle.
Hays County tax offices are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Kyle office closes daily for lunch between 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Commissioner plans meeting on FM 1626
Hays County Pct. 2 Commissioner Mark Jones is hosting a meeting on planned replacement of the low-water crossing on Lakewood Drive near its intersection with FM 1626. Residents voted to fund the project in the November 2008 bond election.
The meeting will be held at Hays Hills Baptist Church, 1401 N. FM 1626, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, February 7.
Representatives from Huitt-Zollars, the county’s project construction manager, will be available to provide in-depth information about the planned improvements and what drivers can expect during construction. Construction is expected to start within the next few months.
