SAN MARCOS — The death of an inmate at the Hays County Jail is now under investigation by the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a news release, at approximately 3:26 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, during routine checks, an inmate was discovered non-responsive at the jail.
Despite the administration of CPR was and emergency medical services being called, the inmate was unable to be resuscitated and was pronounced deceased by the justice of the peace.
The deceased was housed in a cell alone and no foul play is suspected. The preliminary investigation suggests that he passed due to natural causes, the release continued.
At this time, the inmate’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
A prior check had been conducted at 3:12 a.m. and the inmate “appeared normal,” according to the release.
As with all custodial deaths in a jail, a criminal investigation is being conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety, and an internal investigation is being conducted by HCSO’s Office of Professional Responsibility to make sure all policies and procedures were followed.
