House Democrats call for education special session
Texas House Democrats are urging Gov. Greg Abbott to call a special session to increase public school funding, while Abbott is criticizing them for opposing legislation last year that tied increased funding to his pet project — school vouchers. The Austin American-Statesman reported the Democrats sent a letter, written by Rep. Jon Rosenthal, D-Houston, calling for a 30-day special session focused on both increasing per-student funding and investing more in school safety. 05/22/2024 08:00 PM

Goodbye Stockton, my old friend
Goodbye Stockton, my old friend
I never thought when we packed up several cars and a U-Haul to move out to this small Texas desert town of Fort Stockton three years ago that it would ever feel like home. That is, until it did. 05/15/2024 08:50 PM
First female radio announcer broke barriers
First female radio announcer broke barriers
On May 15, 1970 Misty Fincher finally got her first good night’s sleep since a tornado tore through Lubbock four days earlier Moda Fincher, the little girl who grew up to be the first female radio announcer in the Lone Star State and, some say, the whole country, spent her early years in a tiny settlement called Bronte. The original inhabitants wanted to call their new home in the wide-open spaces of West Texas “Bronco,” but the postal authorities said that name was taken. So the town founder, who doubled as the doctor, came up with “Bronte” in honor of his favorite novelist – Emily Bronte. His neighbors, however, had the last word choosing to pronounce it “brahnt.” 05/15/2024 05:00 PM

It’s past time to do more for our kids
It’s past time to do more for our kids
When I was elected to the Wimberley ISD Board of Trustees in 2018, I did so with the aim of helping to provide the optimal learning environment for Wimberley students. I knew there would be a series of “asks” that I would have to make as I joined the board. I’d have to ask myself for a time and energy commitment to serve. My fellow trustees and I would have to ask each other for a strong level of trust and dedication. I would have to ask our superintendent for an amount of accountability required to guide our district. 04/17/2024 08:50 PM
