Mildred E. Huckaby, age 88, a long time resident of Austin, passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2012. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was born in Tampa, Florida on November 25, 1924, the daughter of Bill and Edna Henderson. Mildred graduated from Hillsboro High School in Tampa and worked for Peninsular Telephone Company during World War II. She met Sgt. Otha “Huck” Huckaby when he was stationed at McDill Field, Florida in 1942. They married on her 21st birthday in 1945. To this union two sons were born. After her husband retired from the Air Force, they settled in Austin. Mildred retired Civil Service from Bergstrom Air Force Base. She loved gardening and crafts and was of the Methodist faith. She was a member of Capital City Chapter of American Ex-POW’s. Huck was a German Prisoner of War.
Mildred was preceded in death by her son Dan, her parents, two brothers and a sister. Her husband of 59 years “Huck” passed away June 16, 2005. Mildred is survived by her son Mike Huckaby and wife Pam, grandchildren, Heath Huckaby and girlfriend Melly Chomel, Clay Huckaby and wife Angie, Mandy Thomas and husband Chad, all of Buda, numerous nieces, nephews and good friends.
Funeral Services were held Thursday, December 27 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Chapel. Interment followed at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mildred’s memory to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, P.O. Box 871847, Kansas City, MO 64187 or to the charity of your choice.
