STAFF REPORT
Two plus weeks have passed since Blake Feldt announced that he would leave Hays for the bright lights of Odessa Permian High School.
Since then, fans, students and citizens around the district have been left to ponder: Who will take over the job, and when would Hays CISD hire the next Rebel head coach/athletic coordinator?
One of those questions has finally been answered, but not the one many fans were hoping to find out.
According to Interim Hays CISD Superintendent Carter Scherff, the district is planning to hire the next Hays Rebel football coach/athletic coordinator within the next month.
“We are hoping to have the position filled by February. Our intent is to have the job filled in time for the spring football season,” said Scherff.
However, he would not openly discuss any applicants, citing district policy.
“It is a normal process that we do not discuss applicants who are applying for an open position,” Scherff said.
A formal request has been submitted via the Freedom of Information Act regarding any applicants that have applied for the position.
Scherff did explain who would overview the hire of the next Rebel coach, as well as what the district ultimately hopes to find.
“The hiring process will be handled by a combination of the Central Office and the school at large,” explained Scherff, “Our goal is to find not only the next head football coach at Hays High School, but also someone who can adequately take over as the school’s next Athletic Coordinator.”
Still, like most in the Hays district, the departure of Coach Feldt continues to resonate with the Interim Superintendent.
When asked about the subject, Scherff replied, “I am very excited for Blake (Feldt). That particular job is an opportunity, with it being Permian High School and prestige it brings…but yes, I was very surprised that he was one of the three finalists that were named for the position. However, I am not surprised that he got the job. He is a very good coach.”
