Poachers. Eggs. Such are boiling topics in Mountain City.
Ron saw a sign at our entrance on Thursday and said, “Chickens and Pigs in Mountain City?”
Due to the agenda topics, including a proposed new development behind Mountain City, council moved the Thursday night meeting from City Hall to the Plum Creek Golf Course Club House. Dozens of Mountain Citians attended.
The motion to move forward with the proposed animal ordinance (which includes allowing chickens with some restrictions) was tabled while further discovery is done with Hays County regarding enforcement. Find the document at mountaincitytx.com in the documents section.
Mayor Tiffany Curnutt seeks ASAP emails (through the city’s website) with any comments, suggestions, concerns so the Council has them for the Aug. 14 meeting.
For certain, one home already has legal chickens through a home school project.
One home had bloody evidence of illegal poaching on Saturday morning. Imagine walking out to blood stains on your porch and driveway.
Poacher(s) killed a deer right here in Mountain City. Mayor Curnutt sent word through the City’s email notification system that Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) and the Hays County Sheriffs Office had very little to go on in the investigation, as of Sunday. If you have information, please contact the Sherriff’s Department ASAP.
Some in Mountain City love the deer and want them coming around. Others, love the deer and don’t want so many coming around.
Herds of 30 to 60 are not uncommon. The deer bring delight. And, they bring massive destruction to landscapes. And, they cause personal property damage. Recently, a deer ran into a parked pickup truck.
We “put down” Starr, our almost blind elderly weenie dog, the morning after she was struck by a doe’s sharp hooves. And, KissMe, our Great White Hunter with red spots, got his side hide ripped open. Dachshund 0. White-tail 1.
TPWD says they are not responsible for making management decisions or implementing management strategies for deer on private property. They will provide technical guidance and education for communities facing deer management problems.
Perhaps this incident will open the door for discussion with TPWD and residents about options for controlling our deer population.

The city council has much on its plate.
Our council had zero bids to open for removal of our stacked-by-the-street limbs and logs. They came up with a new plan with hopes for ASAP removal.
Our council must delve into “discovery” after the preliminary presentation from Clark Wilson on the proposed Anthem development on the Nance property behind Mountain City.
Who would want to give volunteer service to face such challenges head on? You? If you are interested in the mayoral position or one of the two open alderman slots you can contact Ellis Craig for an application via email, ecraig1@austin.rr.com. Applications are due by Aug. 18 (close of business) to City Secretary, Ellis Craig or the City Hall.
