The Hays Lady Rebel volleyball team claimed a 25-10, 25-13, and 25-9 over the Lehman Lady Lobos Friday at the Lobo Den.
Hays (15-18, 4-4) junior Hailee Morton led the Lady Rebels with a match high seven kills. Supporting Morton were juniors Mackenzie Coates with 13 assists and Ashley Slovak, who scored nine digs in the match.
Twyla Garcia and Kaytlin Mendoza, who each scored two kills, led the Lady Lobos offense. Kali Palomarez had eight assists and Kaylee Wipff had four digs.
The first set saw the Lady Rebs with an early 7-0 lead over Lehman. It was a gap Lehman couldn’t close as a collective Hays offensive effort kept up the pace.
The Lady Lobos rallied in the second frame, fighting back from a Hays 3-1 advantage. But several kills by Morton helped the Lady Rebels pull ahead and close the set.
Hays’ momentum continued into the third set as they pulled an early lead and never looked back.
A failure to communicate on the court was part of the blame for Lehman’s outcome against their rival.
“We’re still learning how to come together as a unit,” said senior Natalia Barajas.
The Lady Rebels will take on Anderson in Bales Gym Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Lehman hosts Westlake on Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lobo Den.
Win streak
With the win, Hays extends their win streak to 17 straight games over Lehman in the all time series. Hays has never lost to Lehman since the 2007 season.
