Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor: Starting October 23- November 3 and on Election Day November 7, you have an opportunity to vote FOR Prop 9, a TRS Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for over 420,00 TRS public education retireesteachers, administrative personnel, school bus drivers, janitors, maintenance workers, nurses, cafeteria workers and more. I bet you know a publicschool retiree. Think how this modest COLA could help them!

Especially when no one is looking

The grandfather clause
There is often a period of time between the last day of a new mother’s maternity leave and the first day of childcare for the infant. At least that’s what both our daughters informed us for the past thirteen years. They said according to the “experts”, it is beneficial for newborns to spend several weeks with their grandparents to enhance their psychological and sociological growth, or some mumbo-jumbo like that. Who are we to argue with experts, so we grandparents agree to babysit these little bundles of joy.

I'm still a journalism junkie
One day, I was on the phone with my momma reading her a blog post that I had written when she replied, “Lacy, you’ve had a pen in your hand since before you could read words. I used to always tell your father, ‘I don't know what it is about Lacy, but she is naturally drawn to pen and paper.’” Unbeknownst to me at the time that I was born with the gift of writing, a really good memory and wit, just to name a few. However, despite the fact that I was born with these gifts, I had no recollection of the times of which she was speaking. In my immediate family, I am the second of two children, and almost the youngest in my graduating class. I started school a year earlier because it was private, my tuition was free and my father was insistent that my brother and I receive a great education.

What’s in a name?
If you’ve been following video games for any length of time, you have probably heard of “The Last of Us.” In many instances, you didn’t have to play the game to understand that culture that surrounds it. If you still hadn’t heard of it, maybe you did from the HBO series that aired last year while breaking viewership records. This series is where my column title, “Wolves never look up,” comes from.

Escaped convict turns over a new leaf
After Joe Horner’s battle with the buffalo soldiers on Oct. 11, 1874, the wild young outlaw seemed headed for an early grave. Who could have imagined that half a century later he would be the guest of honor at a state funeral in Oklahoma?

You will never get these days back
'One day, you're 17 and you're planning for someday. And then quietly, without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And then someday is yesterday. And this is your life.' - John Green ——— I talk to my mom on the phone almost every day. We talk about how our day went, funny stories about her students, what’s for dinner at our houses, something that my beagle Finn did that day and when the next season of “Virgin River” is supposed to come out because we were left on a cliffhanger.

Tent showman was toast of West Texas
Harley Sadler, a household name throughout West Texas, made his last personal appearance at a benefit for the Boy Scouts on Oct. 9, 1954, but this time there would be no curtain call for the much loved king of the tent shows.

Ode to a pirate
A few weeks ago, one of my favorite musicians passed away. Jimmy Buffett was a great songwriter and a very entertaining performer.

'And that has made all the difference:' On Frost, goodbyes, new beginnings
“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same …” — Robert Frost

Where was I?
I heard some of y’all who still subscribe to a newspaper have been wonderin’ what happened to me. I don’t know if those folks were worried about my well-being or asking if I was finally determined to be legally crazy and placed in a padded cell. I know I haven’t been writing my column as often as I used to, and there are several reasons for my hiatus from the newspapers.

You jump, I jump, Jack
What if you were held responsible for the actions of another? What if you spent the rest of your life behind bars because of a crime you didn’t commit? What if you were sentenced to death?
