Fourteen innings, eight hits, 18 strikeouts and zero runs tell the tale of the two Rebel pitchers, Tyler Woodmansee on Tuesday and Calvin Coker on Thursday, in the pair of Rebel victories last week.
Woodmansee kept the Lobos at bay by scattering five hits in seven innings of work and inducing a ground ball double play in the first to get out of his only jam.
Lobo Justin Penney pitched effectively through five, allowing a run in the second when Rebel David Riojas doubled to left, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Justin Diaz and scored on a balk.
The Rebs eked out a second run in the third when Mike Gonzales reached first on an error, moved to second on Athen Schultz’s bunt and scored on a Justin Montana single.
Leading by two, the Rebs struck big in the sixth, parlaying a trio of walks, and singles by Montana, Riojas and Nate Scott, into a five run inning to move the final tally to 7-0. “Woody” finished with nine strikeouts and extended his scoreless inning streak to 18.
Thursday, with the weather wet and drizzly, the Rebels struck early off Lobo pitcher Derek Cisneros. Again taking advantage of walks to Schultz and Zach Ibarra, Montana’s bunt and a two out single by Riojas put the Rebs up 2-0 in the first.
Coker would also face his biggest threat of the night in the first with two Lobos on and only one out, but would respond with the first of his nine strikeouts to quell the threat. Cisneros’ mix of off- speed pitches held the Rebs scoreless until the sixth when a walk to J.C. Cerda, a stolen base and a single, again by Riojas, added an insurance run for the Rebs.
In the seventh, with two runners on, Lobo right fielder Mark Santos made a remarkable diving catch to rob Montana of extra bases and extend the lead.
Coker, meanwhile, efficiently used his fastball to limit the Lobos to only three hits in his 7 innings and prevent the Lobos from ever threatening the lead.
The Rebels, now 19-4 on the year and 10-2 in district, can finish no worse than second and will play Kerrville Tivy in the final district series. The Lobos, 15-8 and 5-7, will work to keep their playoff hopes alive against Boerne Champion in their last district play.
