Staff report
Seniors at Lehman High School face consequences for their involvement in what’s being called a prank. But those involved could be banned from walking at the graduation ceremony Wednesday evening.
Hays CISD spokesperson Tim Savoy said the campus School Resource Officer (SRO) issued citations to at least three students, two for criminal mischief and one for disorderly conduct for what he said to a law enforcement officer. He did not elaborate on what the student said.
On Monday, Principal Michelle Chae said in a letter to families, “During lunch, we had several Lobos who chose to disrespect themselves, their classmates, their families, and their school. They threw food while the vast majority of our students moved away from the activity to avoid involvement. Afterward, many students stayed to assist our custodians and staff with the clean-up. In the afternoon, many seniors chose to vandalize the school by throwing eggs, baby oil, papers, etc. over the balcony onto other students. They disrupted the learning environment for our underclassmen who were preparing for their finals. Several students have already been identified and have been turned over to our School Resource Officers (SROs) and tickets have been issued. Staff is reviewing video footage as well as social media posts to identify the instigators and participants; they will also be turned over to our SROs.”
Chae added, “I am deeply saddened for our campus and apologize to those students who come to Lehman to learn and to demonstrate respect for themselves and their families. Today’s “prank” was neither funny nor acceptable.
Actions always speak louder than words. THANK YOU to those who conduct themselves with integrity, wisdom, and pride.”
Seniors at Hays High last week dumped the equivelent of reams of paper over the balcony as a prank. Posters on social media said many students also stayed to help the custodial crew clean up the mess. No citations were issued to students at that school.
