Gov. Greg Abbott is at it again with another anti-immigrant stunt. This time he is endangering the health and well-being of immigrants in need of acute medical care. On Aug. 8, Abbott issued an executive order in which he has directed Texas hospitals to begin collecting data on the cost of medical care for undocumented immigrants. By Nov. 1, 2024, state hospitals will need to ascertain the citizen status of patients. This places hospital administrators with the responsibility of gathering the immigrant status of their patients, which will be an overwhelming bureaucratic nightmare. Hospitals are already overburdened with massive paperwork involving patient medical histories, financial status, and insurance coverage and claims, including Medicare and Medicaid coverage. Now hospitals will have to conduct inquiries that legally fall under the purview of the federal government and not the hospital industry. Hospitals are required, and rightfully so, to provide emergency treatment for all patients, regardless of citizen status. 08/21/2024 05:00 PM

Dear Editor: 'I'm Glad She Still Knows Her Place' These are the words my mama spoke to me after the lady had left. I asked mom what she meant. Mom replied, “She knew to come in the side door, not the front door”. 12/13/2023 09:00 PM

Dear Editor: I love rainwater You know why? Because it makes me feel secure. When the wells dry up and the lakes dry up and we're still waiting for salt desalination to get ocean water to our homes, I will be secure with my clean cistern of rain water. 08/16/2023 09:20 PM

Dear Editor: Thank you Free Press/News Dispatch for covering the Milestone Hays Commons issue in Hays City (and the other Milestone proposals in Buda). For well over a year, citizens in many northern Hays County neighborhoods have followed Milestone's proposal for development on the 300+ acres near SH 45, FM 1626, and Bliss Spillar. 06/28/2023 09:00 PM

Dear Editor: Why do men oppose abortion? They are the breadwinners! The majority of the Supreme Court Justices are men according to the last PBS photo. How many of these men voted against abortion? How many have children? Grandchildren? 04/19/2023 09:40 PM
