On Saturday, April 22, Cyndy Slovak-Barton, former owner and publisher of the Hays Free Press and News-Dispatch, received the South Texas Press Association’s Chester Evans Award for distinguished service, in recognition of her years of dedicated service to the South Texas Press Association. Slovak-Barton is a past president of South Texas Press Association and served as the scholarship chairman for many years. She was inducted into the Texas Newspaper Foundation Hall of Fame in 2020. In 2022, she retired after 38 years in the newspaper business.

BUDA — Upon entering Johnson High School on Saturday April 22, real-life princesses in ball gowns opened the doors and music from a simpler time played through the sound system. Turning the corner to enter the cosmetology center, where the event would be taking place, the music became muffled by laughter and talks of who each other’s favorite princesses were.

As April’s sun warms us up, it inspires us to put away winter gear, start spring cleaning and seek new opportunities. April is Global Volunteer Month and National Volunteer Week is April 16–22, which gives us a chance to recognize the important role volunteers hold in our communities.
