Jack C. Hays High’s fight song “Dixie” came under heated scrutiny in June after a white male killed nine members of a prominent black church in South Carolina. Debate about the song also came up in 2012 when the school board nixed the confederate flag. The song was quickly removed from school-sponsored events and replaced by “On Wisconsin.” Former residents returned to their old stopping grounds to voice support, and criticism, for the rally cry. District officials received 80-90 emails about the song and a petition with 1,3000 signatures for the song. The district plans to have a new fight song by January 2016.
